(July 10) Street Roots has just learned that Sam Chase, the Executive Director of the Oregon Opportunity Network (formerly the Community Development Network), will be the Chief of Staff for newly elected City Commissioner Nick Fish.
Update: Here's the letter Chase sent out to voting members of the Oregon Opportunity Network.
Voting Members:
Yesterday, I met with our new Board of Directors after receiving a job offer as Portland Housing Commissioner Nick Fish's Chief of Staff. Having discussed this opportunity with the board and staff at the Oregon Opportunity Network, I decided to accept the position.
While no Executive Director transition is easy, the board, staff and I agree that the timing for this transition will not hinder our momentum in the housing and community development field. In fact, we have built an organization that is not dependent on any one person and I think is very unique in its levels of participation and team work. The core functions of the merger are complete. The financial future of our organization looks better than ever in part with the help of a significant 3 to 5 year commitment from Meyer Memorial Trust. We have staff that are experienced
and well trained to rely on during a transition. And, we have a clear plan for moving forward.Yesterday, the Board established a Search Committee that will be led by Jim Tierney. I will support the team to develop a transition strategy and executive director search. You can expect to be well informed about the process.
I plan to stay on full time until July 31 and will continue to stay in contact with you. I will also be available as needed after August 1 as I begin my Chief of Staff duties.
I have been working with you in my capacity as ED for 6 1/2 years. It has been the most exciting and fulfilling job of my career. The people working in this industry have overwhelmed me with their combination of commitment, passion and intelligence. For many of you, I look forward to continuing our work together in my new capacity.
Sincerely,
Sam Chase
Executive Director
Oregon Opportunity Network
formerly AOCDO/CDN
Chase told Street Roots that he's "looking forward to working with Nick and shares his vision for working with the larger community to create the affordable housing Portland deserves."
