Waxing Americana: Corb Lund

By Sue Zalokar, Staff Writer

Corb Lund hails from a long line of cowboys. He grew up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada, went to college to study bass and jazz guitar and found himself playing bass in a hard rock/metal band for over a decade. These days, he fronts his own country roots band, Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans.

Looking back from the ledge: Death on the streets

By Joanne Zuhl, Staff Writer

He was one of a kind — the man in the white tuxedo and Mickey Mouse ears, playing his trumpet from a corner perch on the Hawthorne Bridge.

But on Nov. 6, “Working” Kirk Reeves became one in a list of Multnomah County’s “domicile unknowns.”

Needle exchange program loses valuable city dollars

Staff Reports

In 1989, Portland’s Outside In, which provides varied services and health care to homeless youth and low-income communities, began a revolutionary needle exchange program. One of the first in the country to offer needle exchange, Outside In has battled through more than two decades of controversy and recessions to continue offering the service.

The program is currently at risk, failing to secure its annual funding in Mayor Charlie Hales’ proposed city budget.

Thom Hartmann wants you to put corporations back in their place

By Joanne Zuhl, Staff Writer

Long, long ago, in a country not unlike our own — actually, exactly like our own — people were people and corporations were corporations.

HUD’s hatchet job

By Jake Thomas and Joanne Zuhl, Staff Writers

By now, every American is probably familiar with the term and concept —— if not the reasoning behind —— the national budget sequester.

Little Sue, shining in a whole new light

By Sue Zalokar, Staff Writer

Susannah Weaver. Why does that name sound familiar? Weaver, otherwise known as “Little Sue” has been a light in the Portland music scene since she moved here 20 years ago. She put out five albums in that time, and then, seemingly, disappeared from the public eye. But she has been here all along and is re-emerging this spring and renewing her love for her Portland fan base with her sixth album, “New Light” which came out April 15.

Hard focus

By Erin Fenner, Staff Writer

About four months ago, approximately a dozen people who were homeless or transitioning out of homelessness got together in a room to discuss what sort of film they wanted to make.

The conversation wasn’t easy.

Their mismatched personalities were more pronounced when contrasted against each other. But it also became evident that their variety of experiences were what would make their film great.

Safety net funding fares well in city budget

Safety net services for Portland’s poor and homeless faced down another season of funding cuts and emerge virtually intact in Mayor Charlie Hale’s budget, released this morning in City Hall.

While federal cuts are still going to hit the city’s housing and homeless services, Hales has fully funded a span of vital programs, preserving $1.04 million for emergency shelter, mental health outreach, at risk students and teens, addiction services and housing retention, among other services.

Talking shop

By Nathan Gilles, Staff Writer

In his left hand, high school senior John Theimer holds a shiny dial caliper. Using the engineering tool, which looks like a cross between a wrench and a pressure gauge, he makes very precise measurements of the toy car he’s holding in his other hand. Part wood, part purple plastic, the car was made for easy disassembly into a series of discrete parts that, under Theimer’s and other students’ close inspection, are measured and recorded. He explains how it works.

Liv and let Liv Warfield

By Sue Zalokar, Contributing Writer

Sultry, smoky, soulful and smooth – sentiments that flow effortlessly between the tone and timber of Liv Warfield’s amazing voice. She is a Portland original, albeit a transplant from the Midwest, one who was not only inspired by her Northwest contemporaries, but who inspired others with her debut album, “Embrace Me.”
